Why Tallow? Who in their right mind would put beef fat on their skin? These are the questions we got most often while trying to convince our friends and family to try our tallow lotions for the first time. Our response was, and always will be... why would you slather a mix of chemicals and toxins on your skin if there was a far superior and all-natural choice out there?
Camano Tallow started in 2021 with no intent to become a company at all. In fact, our only goal was to replace the seed oils in our home with a more natural alternative. Living in a small town provided us with the opportunity to ask our local butcher for beef fat, which we then rendered down and began using in our kitchen daily. From the best homemade french fries to where we are today. There have been a lot of trials and errors, but now we are ready to bring tallow and all the benefits to our neighbors, community, and well... everyone!
While it's true that beef tallow is derived from beef fat, not all fat is created equal. The trimmings around the cow's muscles and from the cuts of meat you may find in your freezer are great for creating a cooking tallow. Cosmetics, though, require a purer type of fat. Enter suet. Otherwise known as organ fat, usually found around the kidneys. This fat renders down with little to no 'beefy smell' and, when done correctly, comes out white and silky. Pairing the suet tallow with different infusions like vanilla beans or coffee and chickory, along with other botanicals, allows us to make lotions, lip balms, and other products that you can be proud to gift to your friends and family.
Once we knew that tallow lotion and lip balm would be the only choice in our home, we began to experiment on what other products that were full of toxins could be replaced by this simple ingredient. That's where our love of making wax melts came in. We love nothing more than to have a good-smelling home, but let's be real, what is even in all the candles, plug-in air fresheners, and mass-produced wax melts available to us? Chemicals. Our wax melts are made with exactly three ingredients: tallow, beeswax, and fragrance. That's it. When at all possible, the fragrance is achieved with essential oils and botanicals, but let's be honest, sometimes you crave the scent of cashmere, and I have yet to figure out how to get a sweater into a candle. So we spent months researching companies and found the perfect one. Also a local company, and 100% of their fragrance oils are phthalate-free. So until we figure out the sweater situation, our wax melts will fill your home with warmth and scent in the most natural way possible.
